According to the U.S. Department of State, 80 percent of South Africa’s population practices Christianity. The largest group of Christian churches, categorized as African Independent Churches, were a result of the Christian missionaries who traveled to southern Africa to spread their religion in the 19th and 20th centuries. Some 9 percent of South Africans do not identify with any organized religion; 11 percent subscribe to other beliefs, including traditional indigenous religions, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism.
